- Looking towards September
Our busy second semester is winding down, with recent Vancouver Competition and the Sunshine Coast Arts Festival. All this is being culminated in our year-end performance, “Dance Upon a Star”.
This year we will be scheduling the shows at the earlier times of 1 pm and 6 pm and students from the pre-school classes, kids Hip Hop/Jazz, pre-primary and primary Ballet will only be performing in the 1 pm shows.
We are very grateful to the many people who have volunteered to be Class Co-ordinators, or help in other ways. The time leading up to the shows is very busy and exciting, with lots of assistance required, but it is very rewarding to those involved. Please let us know if you can help out over the show weekend.
Hopefully, you are already aware of your dancer’s costume needs per class, but if there is something you are uncertain of, please let us know. If any costume fees are still outstanding it is imperative these are paid promptly prior to the upcoming studio dress rehearsal. Costumes will be withheld if payment has not been received. Costume fees are payable to your Class Rep unless informed otherwise.
The designated Class Representative is responsible for bringing their classes’ costumes to the CAD Dress Rehearsals and to the appropriate dressing areas at the Raven’s Cry Theatre at 3:30 on Friday, June 8th. Please check with your Class Rep as to whether they will be collecting the costumes after rehearsal and returning them for show times or if you will be responsible for your own dancer’s costume. Any costumes that have been borrowed from CAD can be left at the theatre for collection by Academy Staff after the final show, or brought in to the studio between 3:30 pm and 6 pm on June 13.
Dressing Room Lists are posted at the Academy, along with the Order of The Show, as well as the CAD Dress Rehearsal, with approximate times (listed below).
Performance Ticket
Tickets can be purchased at Lucky’s, Pretty Natty Duds and at the CAD office as of May 7.
$25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors. Please remember that it is essential to purchase a ticket for your child if they would like to watch any portion of the show. Parents will not be permitted to “pop-in” to see their child’s dance without a ticket. Fire regulations are very strict, and no exceptions will be made.
Outstanding Fees
Please be reminded that any outstanding dance fees must be paid in full in order for your child to perform in the show (as per our school policy).
Performance Weekend
Students above Primary level are to arrive at 3:30 pm on Friday June 8 and congregate in the audience area for an address from the teachers. Following that, you will be dismissed to your individual dressing areas, where you will prepare for your dance(s) until the “runners” come to collect you.
Pre-school level dancers up to Primary level should arrive at 4:15 pm and go directly to your dressing room area.
For those parents chaperoning pre-school children, kindly endeavour to keep the children calmly occupied while in their dressing areas. They may bring toys and books, but no felts … and only water and non-staining foods are allowed in the dressing areas. Also please note it is imperative to have 2 or 3 parents accompany the little dancers to the stage when they are called by the runners. Please ensure you have the same number of dancers both ways!
We will not be installing carpets in the tents due to the risk of rain. Please feel free to bring a small mat for your child if you wish.
It is extremely important to pick up younger students once they have performed. They must not be left in dressing areas between the shows. We need to ensure that there are enough adult volunteers to supervise the students during the show in all of the dressing room areas.
Finale Bow
All dancers are invited to stay and participate in the finale. It is important to participate in the studio dress rehearsal on May 27 at 5:50 pm to learn the spacing and short choreography. We will also be posting a video of the choreography on our Facebook page.
Pre-Professional Programme
Our Academy offers a three-year programme to Grade 10, 11, 12, or Post-Secondary students. There is an emphasis on strong technique, post-secondary dance career exploration, and could lead to the ISTD Associate Diploma in Tap and/or Modern and Ballet. Any students currently at the Intermediate level in dance who aspire to this, would benefit from scheduling an appointment with Julie Izad to learn more, and to choose classes which will benefit them. If you have any family members or friends off-Coast who may be interested, they are welcome to approach us, as there is possibility of home-stay.
Looking Towards September
A tentative schedule for next year will be made available during the Performance Weekend. You may come to discuss your child’s classes on June 13 between 3:30 pm and 6 pm.
Office Hours remain Monday – Thursday 3:30 pm – 6 pm until June 7.
The telephone answering machine is always available for leaving messages.
Regular attendance is expected and every effort made to attend any extra classes or combined classes in order for the dancers to be comfortable with their presentations at the Theatre.
We know there are a lot of details, and we thank you for your attention to these, and for your assistance in making the weekend memorable for our families and the community.

Competitions 2018 – 2019
Firstly, I would like to congratulate this year’s competition team. They all did an outstanding job at the festival and competition this year bringing back high marks and trophies. They all represented their school and families with pride, maturity and incredible enthusiasm. Well done!
Looking forward to next year: we will be holding a general audition for all competition classes on June 11 & 12 at 4 pm. We are hoping to expand our competition participation and include more groups along with solos and duets. We also hope to open the competition experience to younger students. There will be more information to follow.
Thank you.
